What do you do when your textiles come out of the production process? You make them even better. Finishes are the perfect way to do so, as they add a high number of extra features to your textiles. You apply finishes to protect them against water and oil, to make them feel softer, or to safeguard their long-lasting quality. Our business unit manager Functional Finishing described finishing as “adding extra value to your textiles”, and he was spot on. The more qualities you add; the higher the value of your end-product.
Important as they are, most finishes have become quite standard. Softeners, for example, are normally added to improve the feel of the fabric, while anti-stats minimise static charging and easy care finishes enhance care properties. At a higher level, there are finishes that improve anti-pilling, rub fastness, elasticity, and so on. You can take finishing one step further by adding functional features to your textiles, like a specific fragrance, flame retardant properties, or even insect repellents and cosmetics. And, nowadays especially, customers ask for high wash-durability. No matter the wish of your customer; there’s probably a finish that goes with it.
